Friends of Astoria Youth and the Literary Arts:
I need your help publishing the words, images and sounds from Astoria High School’s extraordinary collection of young creative minds.
Over the years, Astoria High School (AHS) has offered creative writing classes, but without an outcome of a printed literary review showcasing student writing and art. The 2016 AHS Creative Writing Class plans to produce a perfect bound book-length literary review containing student fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography and art (and a possible CD of music and spoken word performances). The class will launch the review with a public event featuring readings and music.
The review requires $2500 to print 250 copies of an approximately 175-page literary review that includes a color insert for student art. (The CD will cost $500 produce) To this point, the project has received $1500 in donations and grant funds.
You can help by donating to fund the review. All contributors will be mentioned in the acknowledgements section of the review. Contributors donating more than $20 receive a complimentary review.
A published literary review at AHS will create a new and exciting opportunity for youth: there is nothing more magical than having your writing and art published in a book. This project will also help raise community awareness of issues affecting Astoria-area youth by publishing the thoughts, ideas, and images that emanate from young writers and artists.
The review will also change lives. I’ve seen that happen many times over the years of publishing books with my students. Getting published in my high school’s literary review in 1981 in Oregon City changed mine.
