The Far Out Story of Vortex I

As the 50th anniversary of Vortex I approaches, I have been receiving lots of messages and emails about the availability of my book, The Far Out Story of Vortex I, published in 2004 by Nestucca Spit Press.

It sold out some 12 or 13 years ago and has gone on to become a rare book and kind of expensive. I don’t own a single copy myself! The book has almost disappeared off rare book sites and I attribute that to the interest generated by the upcoming anniversary and the various events planned to commemorate the festival this summer. I did a little check with some of my bookstore friends in Oregon and discovered that a copy does exist at Gold Beach Books for $75 plus shipping. Just google the bookstore and you’ll find your way to the book and how to order. It has the CD of McCall’s Vortex speech and the rocking album by Jacob’s Ladder.

There was some hope that I was going to publish a follow-up to the book, called The Victory of Vortex I, that would have updated the story, offered new insights, and included hundreds of new photos I received after the first book came out. I had secured a donation from an Oregon printer to cover the printing cost for a 2000-book run, but another entity that might have helped out with expenses toward design, etc., well it didn’t work out. I wasn’t going to paid anything.

That was too bad, because the new book was going to be free, just like the original festival.
