{"id":9948,"date":"2026-07-26T07:05:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T14:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/?p=9948"},"modified":"2026-07-26T07:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T14:05:09","slug":"philomath-wine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/meditations\/philomath-wine\/","title":{"rendered":"Philomath Wine"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- wp:themify-builder\/canvas \/-->\n\n\n<p>She called it Philomath wine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a four-pack of Cook&#8217;s champagne mini bottles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>purchased at a gas station in Philomath<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>before driving Highway 20 to see me in Newport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;d swig one, possibly two,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on the road that annually racked up the most human and elk fatalities in Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tokes on the joint with a roach clip, too,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>as Portland punk rock thundered on the stereo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We met at a Derrick Jensen reading,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>made out on Nye Beach afterward,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lost contact after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years later she called me on my last land line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;d found me in the last phone book ever printed with Newport listings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet&#8217;s meet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dive bar on the Bayfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She showed me the first (and only) page of her novel called <em>The Writer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read it at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She watched me read and relished the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a love letter to me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>written with professional skill,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>of an untamed (thankfully) novelist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If only I still had it to quote here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes I didn&#8217;t know she was coming, although usually I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She studied acupuncture,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dreaming of opening her own shop in New York City,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a place she&#8217;d never seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked, talked, talked for hours on the front deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drained cases of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She never checked her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ate greasy Sunday breakfasts and drank bloody marys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salty Dog in Waldport or Timbers in Toledo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once she ripped off her dress on the beach, sprinted to the ocean,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dived in, jumped up with her arms raised high, flexing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once she punched me in the shoulder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so I wouldn&#8217;t interrogate a man reading the <em>Bible<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on a driftlog with his back to the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I just wanted to know which testament!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once she dragged me off the couch to celebrate the Fourth of July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ended up saving a dog spooked by fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She always wore the same flimsy dress when she visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it was the only one she owned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A squall blew that dress off her body in front of a Thai restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were trying to enter but the wind barred the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She tip-toed to the dress,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>slipped it on,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and we got the order to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I verged on asking her to move in after she graduated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>start something novel, explosive, possibly scandalous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, she moved to New York and opened the shop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She called it Philomath wine, a four-pack of Cook&#8217;s champagne mini bottles purchased at a gas station in Philomath before driving Highway 20 to see me in Newport.
