when a Sometimes a Great Notion<\/em> level<\/p>\n\n\n\n rainstorm walloped Waldport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was her favorite novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She was kind of a Hank Stamper<\/p>\n\n\n\n in her own modern way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She’d pull the tailgate down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n throw open the canopy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n shove her surfer shit to the side,<\/p>\n\n\n\n we’d dive onto the yoga mat,<\/p>\n\n\n\n rustle up some moldy blankets,<\/p>\n\n\n\n she’d wrench up the tailgate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n slam down the canopy<\/p>\n\n\n\n with a super clank!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n She wanted to hear the cannonade<\/p>\n\n\n\n of rain smashing into the canopy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n the shaking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n screws unscrewing,<\/p>\n\n\n\n clamps unclamping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe rollers on the ocean<\/p>\n\n\n\n mixed in the soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She didn’t want to hear anything human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her husband wouldn’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were swingers anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the rainstorm hit,<\/p>\n\n\n\n and school wasn’t in session (!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n she’d text me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I would race to the parking lot overlooking Alsea Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Twenty minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n if I don’t get stuck behind<\/p>\n\n\n\n an RV or log truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What happens if it’s light outside?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Or the parking lot is full?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n All the better she says.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n We’re going to make our own country song!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n With no lyrics!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Rainstorms came and went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It never happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If it had, no poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mystery over planning,<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The principal said she wanted to have sex in the back of her tiny pickup when a Sometimes a Great Notion level rainstorm walloped Waldport.
