An osprey flies over the dog park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then another, with a stick in its jaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Somewhere, a nest is under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ospreys remind me of my late friend Gary,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
truly an osprey man if there ever was one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had osprey stories,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
stories of Rogue River eels and fish<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dropped from the sky,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and Gary frying them up for supper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christ what an image for a poem!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or that time Gary was ordered<\/p>\n\n\n\n
by some hippie woman to return an eel<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that an osprey dropped in his boat<\/p>\n\n\n\n
parked in the driveway,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
return the damn thing to the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He filled a cooler full of water,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
threw the eels inside,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(along with some cans of beer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
drove to the jetty,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and dumped the eel into the river<\/p>\n\n\n\n
on an outgoing tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gary was pissed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wanted to try out<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a new recipe for eels<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dropped from the sky by ospreys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some fresh rosemary,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a whiskey butter glaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some cedar chips<\/p>\n\n\n\n
on the barbecue,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
don’t smoke it too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eat the eel with your hands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
