I finished writing my Oregon City\nmemoir this morning. It was one of the more enjoyable writing\nprojects of my life and I hope it finds an audience. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I’m pounding this out on my Alphasmart\nand the bartender just asked me about it. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I near the end of reading Tolstoy’s\nAnna Karenina<\/em>. It’s been 30+ years since the last reading. I’m\ninto it. I keep wondering if Tolstoy knew that privileged, upper\nclass, delusional life of the Russian aristocracy was going to get\nburied forever in 40 or so years by Lenin and the Revolution. And\nthey were beyond worse than what came before them. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n A young tourist couple on a romantic\ngetaway played on their phones throughout their entire meal. I\nwondered if they tasted their food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A woman ate a hamburger while watching\nsomething on her laptop. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n A reader of the rain book wrote me an\nastonishing account of how he found the book and what it meant to him\nin a time of crisis. I wrote that book in a time of crisis. Is that\nwhere all the best writing comes from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n My body still hurts after the labor of\nplanting 300 trees. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n I reached out to someone I care about.\nNothing. I won’t give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A former student wrote me that writing\nin a journal has helped her deal with crisis. I wonder how many of my\nformer students still write in a journal, a practice I introduced and\nrequired?
