I wasn&#8217;t expecting anyone. It was early evening and dark outside. I set down <em>Anna Karenina<\/em> and got up from the couch.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At my door were two neighbors from a\nfew domiciles away, younger men, partners I think, but hard to tell.\nOne was burly and bearded, the other lanky, wearing pink sneakers and\npink highlights in Jesus-length hair. Quite the couple! \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few hours before, I had gifted them\nwith two beaverwood walking sticks, and here they were&#8230;for what? \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had met months earlier, as they were\nstrolling by and I was outside, sorting through my collection of\nbeaverwood. They came over and I gave them the lowdown on the\ncollection and my admiration for the beaver&#8217;s unique art-making\nabilities. They were positively ecstatic to learn about beavers and\nto hold beaverwood in their hands for the first time. I converted\nthem on the spot  \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then one of them asked if he could have\na piece for a walking stick. The other wanted one, too. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But of course! Of course! I let them\nbrowse and they eventually chose two beauties that Moses would have\nbeen proud to part the Red Sea with. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next few months, they wore out\nthose sticks and asked if they could have new ones. Of course! They\ntold me they loved walking with beaverwood staffs. They walked so\nmuch damn better! \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the door, the two men, presented me\na gift that was a painting on a flat rock of a goofy beaver gnawing a\npiece of wood! Are you kidding me? They had painted it not long after\nI gave them the staffs and this was their extraordinary thanks. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was truly dumbfounded and overjoyed.\nIt was one of the nicest gestures of appreciation I have ever\nexperienced in my life. \n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard a knock at my door.
