She wielded her lap dogs like pistols in bars and salons and\nalways got the last word. If only she was alive today and hosting a\ncontemporary talk show with her dogs. Prince wrote a song about\nDorothy Parker and it occurs to me he&#8217;d still be alive if he had a\ndog. Music was his whole life, the world is better as a result, but\nit wasn&#8217;t enough for him. I would have loved to heard a Prince song\nabout his dog. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does the phrase \u201cthe dog had his\nday\u201d mean? Rupert Brooke answered the question in his charming poem\ntitled, \u201cThe Little Dog&#8217;s Day.\u201d One stanza reads: <em>He took\nsinewy lumps from \/ the shins of old frumps. <\/em>At the end of the\npoem, the dog dies <em>In the gloom of the twilight gray<\/em> but not\nbefore doing everything he&#8217;d always wanted to do, meaning \u201cthe dog\nhad his day.\u201d If you were a dog, what would be \u201cyour day?\u201d List\nthose things you&#8217;ve always wanted to do but social custom thwarts or\nprevents. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrose Bierce in <em>The Devil&#8217;s\nDictionary<\/em> defined a dog as, \u201cA kind of additionally or\nsubsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the\nworship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amen!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dorothy Parker was a great American dog woman.
