I much prefer it to\nhis novels. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are a few of my responses to what\nI read and a few choice quotes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller displays an unbounded enthusiasm\nfor life and his subjects, something I rarely encounter in\ncontemporary American nonfiction writing. I like to believe I bring\nan unbounded enthusiasm for my subjects: forts, rain, dogs, beaches,\nOregon history, Oregon books. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would love to write the dog book\nHenry Miller would have written had he ever owned dogs. Same with\ndriftwood forts. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLife only commences at the hour of\nspiritual birth\u2014which may be at 18 or 47.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA really great book begins in the\nmidriff and works outward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomebody has got to throw a monkey\nwrench into the works&#8230;I owe it to the American buffalo and red\nIndian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller wrote more about normal American\nlife than any other writer of his era and he lived completely outside\nof normal American life. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven a puppy knows when it is being\ncarried to a pond to be destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently completed reading a large collection of Henry Miller&#8217;s nonfiction writing.
