A while back, someone destroyed one of the forts I built and left the following note behind in my fort message box:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There’s enough<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n structures in the<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n world without you<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n also adding structures at<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n an undeveloped beach. I<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n enjoy undoing your work<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n every night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n At the time, I didn’t know how to\nrespond, but mulled over the various possibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Build another fort and see what\nhappens. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Build a fort and stake it out, wait for\nhim. Gather more intelligence. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave a message behind asking for a\nparley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave an essay behind that shares my\nphilosophy about fort building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave a note behind saying he’s one in\na million who hates my forts. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave a sentence behind asking why he’s\nso angry at a corral fort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave an invitation behind asking for a\nlonger explanation for his hostility toward the fort. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leave him a screed that rips his\nwrongheadedness about forts. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Challenge to him some kind of duel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Set up a booby trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A week or so ago, I built a new fort\nnot far from where the destroyed once stood. I left behind a note\n(see graphic) inside a container. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n I returned to the fort three days later\nand it had collapsed in a manner inconsistent with a collapse caused\nby winds or tides. (I know about these things.) I opened the\ncontainer but couldn’t tell if the note had been read or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now what? Do I continue to invite\nreflection and reconsideration? Do I give up?
