{"id":4987,"date":"2019-04-09T07:09:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T14:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/?p=4987"},"modified":"2020-06-21T18:48:48","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T01:48:48","slug":"get-off-my-cloud-an-epic-poem-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/meditations\/get-off-my-cloud-an-epic-poem-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Off My Cloud (An Epic Poem \/ Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A word deranged, a word profaned,<br \/>\na word of Wordsworth, The Temptations,<br \/>\nmeteorology and metaphor,<br \/>\nnursery rhymes and<br \/>\nteenagers skipping class<br \/>\nto splay on the grass,<br \/>\ntake a toke,<br \/>\nguzzle rum<br \/>\nswiped from a mother&#8217;s stash,<br \/>\nhold hands,<br \/>\ntickle stomachs,<br \/>\nand gaze upward,<br \/>\nand find<br \/>\nblack and white dragons,<br \/>\nmeat cleavers,<br \/>\nrocking chairs,<br \/>\ntrombones,<br \/>\nand make up stories<br \/>\nabout faces<br \/>\nthey find in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, you, get off of my cloud<br \/>\nHey, you, get off of my cloud <\/p>\n<p>A word usurped, a word ripped off,<br \/>\na word once without lucre,<br \/>\na word kidnapped<br \/>\nby the Omnipotent Colossus,<br \/>\nand its well-paid drones,<br \/>\ndrones who have never looked at clouds,<br \/>\nand certainly not from both sides now,<br \/>\nor seen clouds in their coffee,<br \/>\nclouds in their coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I want the word back!<br \/>\nI want William to become a Word Slayer,<br \/>\nand slay this new vulgarity.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, he must travel<br \/>\nforward in time,<br \/>\nthrough eons of time,<br \/>\nin a space ship<br \/>\nof a timeless cirrus design,<br \/>\nequipped with a cassette player,<br \/>\nand mix tapes with only songs<br \/>\nthat mention clouds. <\/p>\n<p>There must be 10,000 such songs.<br \/>\nAnother 100,000 unrecorded.<br \/>\nEvery tape begins with<br \/>\nCaptain Beefheart&#8217;s \u201cThe Clouds are Full of Wine (Not Whiskey or Rye)\u201d<br \/>\nEvery tape ends with that rap song about Edna St Vincent Millay and her cumulus musings. <\/p>\n<p>Prince sang: We&#8217;ll get to something higher that doesn&#8217;t require clouds<br \/>\nNo, we don&#8217;t need no clouds.<\/p>\n<p>William the Word Slayer, sir,<br \/>\nnever mind Prince&#8217;s double negative,<br \/>\nor how terribly wrong he was (the only time),<br \/>\nembrace your new violent destiny.<br \/>\nGo forth and kill.
