Waves shaped like
\nNabokov’s motels
\nwashed ashore,
\ndeep blue, slate gray, lime green,
\ncolors congealing,
\ncolors of Melville’s meditation. <\/p>\n
Beautiful to behold,
\nthese Nabokov waves,
\nfrom land,
\nwhere I was,
\neating a cheese sandwich
\non a driftlog,
\nwatching a tiny crab boat,
\na toy really,
\nhalf a football field away
\nthat couldn’t, shouldn’t be there,
\nbobbing, listing, rolling, flailing
\nin the madness
\nof swells and sprays.<\/p>\n
I was eating lunch
\nand wondering if the boat would capsize,
\nthat I might have to do something
\nlike call 9-1-1,
\nor drag the captain
\nout of the surf,
\nperform mouth to mouth,
\non a fool. <\/p>\n
I would do nothing.
\nI would watch death
\nfrom the front row.
\nI would later
\nwrite a poem about death.
\nPoets relish death
\nso much more than rescue.
\nThey know how to write about death,
\nbut they don’t know how to rescue.
\nActually they don’t care to rescue.

I heard something in the distance.
\nI looked up and south.
\nA Coast Guard chopper!
\nGoddammit!
\nMy only hope
\nwas a broken rope,
\na Coastie Falling
