Brine hung in the air<\/p>\n
like drapes in the musty mansion<\/p>\n
of a Dickens’ novel.<\/p>\n
(I’ve been on a Dickens kick.)<\/p>\n
I built a fort to empty my mind<\/p>\n
and at first succeeded,<\/p>\n
but only for a few minutes.<\/p>\n
Off shore, pelicans dive bombed the ocean.<\/p>\n
I broke a sweat and pulled off the tattered V-neck.<\/p>\n
I used to teach in this sweater,<\/p>\n
now I build forts in it for survival.<\/p>\n
Not many sweaters ride that arc.<\/p>\n
A man who looked like Jesus from the movies,<\/p>\n
walked along the trail above me.<\/p>\n
I swear he gave me a blessing<\/p>\n
and then disappeared into the mist.<\/p>\n
Jesus in the mist.<\/p>\n
None of that in the New Testament.<\/p>\n
Torpor gripped me,<\/p>\n
draining everything.<\/p>\n
I fight the torpor imposed upon me,<\/p>\n
by a formidable enemy<\/p>\n
of factotums,<\/p>\n
gorged on cannibalism.<\/p>\n
I fight with friends, forts, words, eagles,<\/p>\n
rivers, trees, birds, beaches and dogs<\/p>\n
as my allies.<\/p>\n
We fight in the open and we fight in secret.<\/p>\n
We always fight on the high road.<\/p>\n\n
