{"id":3707,"date":"2018-03-09T06:54:31","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T14:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/?p=3707"},"modified":"2020-06-21T18:53:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T01:53:16","slug":"blades-grass-not-probation-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/meditations\/blades-grass-not-probation-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"Blades of Grass (not a probation poem)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I sit in the car, reading Perry Mason,<\/p>\n<p>thinking about something he said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery man, every offense<\/p>\n<p>needs to be judged on its own merit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m 45 minutes early,<\/p>\n<p>parked near the drainage ditch.<\/p>\n<p>The willows await spring leaves<\/p>\n<p>and more cigarette butts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This parking lot is the ugliest place<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve ever seen in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m part of its landscape,<\/p>\n<p>a landscape without people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A big black pickup<\/p>\n<p>pulls up next to me.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s blotting out the sun.<\/p>\n<p>The driver gets out,<\/p>\n<p>walks to the office.<\/p>\n<p>Two women get out,<\/p>\n<p>and walk toward<\/p>\n<p>the ditch to smoke.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s legal there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They appear Native American,<\/p>\n<p>one in her 60s, one in her 30s.<\/p>\n<p>The latter is beautiful,<\/p>\n<p>loose black hair,<\/p>\n<p>black lips,<\/p>\n<p>black jeans,<\/p>\n<p>black hoodie<\/p>\n<p>advertising a Portland pot shop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She begins crawling into the ditch.<\/p>\n<p><i>What? <\/i><\/p>\n<p>I get out. The meeting starts soon.<\/p>\n<p>I bring along Perry.<\/p>\n<p>Walt is history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s going on down there,\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n<p>I move to inspect.<\/p>\n<p>I smell cigarette smoke.<\/p>\n<p>I look down.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s kneeling near the water,<\/p>\n<p>taking closeups with her phone,<\/p>\n<p>but not of herself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She looks up at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s so beautiful, the green,<\/p>\n<p>the moss, the grass, the blades of grass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I mention the willows without leaves,<\/p>\n<p>thin cylinders of various greens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I saw them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She emerges from the ditch, smoking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you,\u201d I say,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cfor finding beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiles and smokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to look for it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I walk into the office,<\/p>\n<p>pull out Perry,<\/p>\n<p>begin to read.<\/p>\n<p>No probation office poem today.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-3707\" data-postid=\"3707\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-3707 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I sit in the car, reading Perry Mason, thinking about something he said, \u201cEvery man, every offense needs to be judged on its own merit.\u201d &nbsp; I&#8217;m 45 minutes early, parked near the drainage ditch.
