That realization transformed the Oregon political landscape overnight and came about, in large part, thanks to Matt Kramer\u2019s reporting on the issue<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/37.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2967\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/37-300x118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/37-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/37-768x302.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/37-1024x403.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Matt Kramer was a veteran Associated Press reporter covering the Capitol beat in Salem during the battle to pass the Beach Bill. In the space of three months, he wrote approximately 50,000 words of hard news alerting and educating readers about the threat to the state\u2019s beaches if the bill suffered defeat. One article in particular, headlined \u201cBeach Bill Revival Sought,\u201d appeared May 5, 1967 in newspapers across the state, and helped galvanize public support for the bill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To honor Kramer\u2019s journalism, the state erected a memorial plaque to him in 1972 in Oswald West State Park, overlooking Short Sands Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The plaque reads: \u201cThe people of Oregon hereby express their gratitude to Matt Kramer of the Associated Press, whose clear and incisive newspaper articles were instrumental in gaining public support for passing of the 1967 Beach Bill.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2968\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2-768x1106.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2-711x1024.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.nestuccaspitpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mattkramercolor2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Anyone who loves Oregon\u2019s ocean beaches should make a pilgrimage there and lay hands on the memorial. I visit all the time and always gain incredible inspiration from Kramer&#8217;s journalistic accomplishments.
