(One of my great friends in Astoria recently celebrated a birthday. I wrote this poem for her to mark the occasion.)<\/em><\/p>\n

I gathered beaverwood for a birthday,<\/p>\n

for a friend who keeps me in sauerkraut and Maigret,<\/p>\n

a bundle of gnawed sticks<\/p>\n

strewn across the beach,<\/p>\n

washed down from the watersheds,<\/p>\n

to stake up her tomato plants<\/p>\n

that probably won\u2019t make it in Astoria,<\/p>\n

but we\u2019ll stake them up nonetheless,<\/p>\n

in our sluiced gray gardens,<\/p>\n

because that\u2019s us,<\/p>\n

our lives right now,<\/p>\n

staking up tomato plants in territories<\/p>\n

where they aren\u2019t supposed to grow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We rejoice in all things beavers!<\/p>\n

We gladly accept what they offer!<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t stake up our tomatoes<\/p>\n

with cheap bamboo from China!<\/p>\n

All hail Oregon beavers!<\/p>\n

When they roll lily pads<\/p>\n

and smoke them like fine cigars,<\/p>\n

we get it. We want to join them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And when we taste those tomatoes,<\/p>\n

later in the hot Oregon summer,<\/p>\n

probably in the rain,<\/p>\n

we will toast our furry bucktoothed friends,<\/p>\n

and nod our heads in wonder<\/p>\n

at their persistence to start over,<\/p>\n

after high water destroys their dams,<\/p>\n
