while the sprinklers<\/p>\n\n\n\n
green the grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of the Little League field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKids have priority\u201d a sign reads,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and I wonder about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across the park<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I see a white truck<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and a large man<\/p>\n\n\n\n
tending hundreds of hotdogs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
grilling on a machine<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that looks like it could fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He cooks alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a minute<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wonder if any kids<\/p>\n\n\n\n
will make his party<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Time to gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I lift the dogs into the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
drive to the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A book event in Seaside?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On a Saturday in the summer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a thousand Harleys in town?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seven people show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One brings me cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One calls himself Beach Bob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One has written a novel of Christians in the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One walks in holding a motorcycle helmet<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and a cigar she just snuffed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\u2019s 23 I\u2019ll bet,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
must really love Oregon history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Probably a closet writer<\/p>\n\n\n\n
