Happy 50th Anniversary Vortex I

The end of August marks the 50th anniversary of the most far out event in American history—Vortex I, the only state sponsored rock festival in American history. It unfolded the last weekend of August 1970 at McIver State Park near Estacada, about 30 miles southeast of Portland. (The official logo is pictured above.)

My 2004 book, The Far Out Story of Vortex I, chronicled this unprecedented and legendary Oregon event. It sold out in a couple years but an e-book version is available through my web site and Amazon.

All this week I will be posting some primary documents related to Vortex, excepts from interviews and articles, some of my writing about the event, and some photos, oh the photos, that tell the story a lot better than any words. Enjoy.

I’d love to have Vortexers chime in with some memories.

And consider this: don’t we need some creative problem solving in Oregon today? Is there something in Vortex I worth taking away and applying today.

Yes. Hell yes.
